NEWS OF THE WEEK

Samara Cyn – Detour

Samara Cyn – Detour cover

Samara Cyn is a singer and rapper from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, who released her debut project, The Drive Road, in 2024. She continued the theme of the journey last year with her EP backroads, and her latest project—the EP Detour—is no exception. As the project’s first track makes clear, Samara is FREE, and so she has set out on a “detour from expectations.”

The EP is sensitive and musically diverse; Samara Cyn is still finding her place in the world and within the music scene. She is a nomad traveling from one sound to another, so the project doesn’t feel entirely cohesive, but everyone will find an emotion in it that resonates with them. Don’t get us wrong—it doesn’t even have to feel cohesive. On every track, Samara sounds as if she’s discovering it through her own words, searching for hidden corners in the melodies, and that is the beauty of the entire EP.

NEWS

Time Heals Everything

The legendary duo is back in its purest form. Exile on production, Blu on the mic—the creators of (not only) the iconic album Below the Heavens (2007). Their new collaborative album, Time Heals Everything, is set to be released on April 20, 2026. A preview in the form of the track Crumbs is already out, and it’s a real slap in the face to the system. With the help of guests Rome Streetz and ICECOLDBISHOP, they deliver a raw confession about the streets, where instead of hope, they give us guns and force us to scrape by on crumbs. It’s angry, and it’s true. Want to experience it firsthand? Blu & Exile have announced a tour—check out their Instagram to see if they’re coming to a city near you.

LIVE @ ICTFest 2024

Jouquin Fox is one of those underground artists who is definitely worth keeping an eye on. Last year, he released several great projects and even appeared as a guest on the album Contacting by Sunmundi & Sasco, which we selected as the best album of last year (we’ll write about Sunmundi a bit later). Last week, the artist released his first live album on Bandcamp, recorded in 2024 by Curtis Palmer (aka ICTAudio) during jouquin’s performance at ICTFest. A live album is the best possible substitute for a full-fledged rapper concert, so if you’re from Europe, like us, you won’t get any closer to the atmosphere he creates on stage. jouquin fox also revealed that he released the live album to raise funds for his tour. “Any $$$ spent on this album, or anywhere on my Bandcamp, will be going into said fund. I’ll be performing in Detroit, Akron, and Kent, OH, plus Brooklyn, with other underground hip-hoppers Monzy the Terrible, Snotnose Saleem, and KILLVONGARD from April 12th–16th,” he writes on Bandcamp. Buy his music and support this great artist.

I Think You’re Bleeding (prod. Chef Bezos)

We usually reserve the News section for better-known artists whose plans deserve to reach the widest possible audience, but f *ck it. Sunmundi is one of the most distinctive rappers working today, and as we mentioned in the news item above, we named his album Contacting (/w Sasco) our album of the year. Sunmundi released a new single last week, I Think You’re Bleeding (prod. Chef Bezos), and it probably won’t surprise you that you should check it out. The beat by Chef Bezos is diametrically different from anything Sasco has produced for Sunmundi and is more reminiscent of tracks from the album Lived and Born (w/ klwn cat). Whatever the beat, Sunmundi loses none of his skill for writing in an immersive, emotional, and technically precise way. “Ka said they meant to accompany, though we calling em verses, These rhymes give me drive, I’m stalling them hearses,” oh man…

BEST ALBUMS

Duncecap & Samurai Banana – Comfortably Suffering

Duncecap & Samurai Banana - Comfortably Suffering cover
Duncecap & Samurai Banana – Comfortably Suffering cover

After 10 years, Duncecap & Samurai Banana have released their second collaborative album—Comfortably Suffering. The world has changed, and their album reflects that—it’s more chaotic, bombastic, and angry. The New York-based artists are loosely following up on their album Human Error, but their sound has crystallized over the past decade—expect even crazier concepts. The very second track on the album, Content(we feel a little guilty about sharing a link to our short text on Instagram, but hey, we want to get this great music out to people), offers listeners a place where they can lose themselves for a few hours. Samurai Banana produces all-consuming beats, and Duncecap boasts an endless supply of creative bars. The album is full of ideas you’ve never heard before. Does the track Sell Sand(feat. Old Grape God) sample the sound of dolphins? The social changes that have taken place over the last ten years are reflected in the final track, Be Upset (feat. k-the-i???). Fascism is cementing its place in society, colonizers are setting their sights on more and more pieces of land that don’t belong to them (in the words of Obijuan: “demon”), and the planet’s temperature is hurtling toward irreversible apocalyptic levels. Be upset and make it known.

Da Flyy Hooligan & Argov – Supreme Cut Untouched Magnificence II

Da Flyy Hooligan & Argov – Supreme Cut Untouched Magnificence II cover

Supreme Cut Untouched Magnificence II is a manifesto of transatlantic rap aesthetics. On this album, Da Flyy Hooligan has definitively bridged the gap between London and Buffalo. Agor’s production beneath it breathes like wet asphalt; it’s a minimalist backdrop for rap that doesn’t beg for attention but commands respect. This is the most ambitious album of the rapper’s career, and the guest list proves it—Conway, Rome Streetz, Westside Gunn, Guilty Simpson, Sean Price, Mama Rose, MAV, Rome Streetz, and General Steele. The highlight of the album is GUILTY VERDIX, where Guilty Simpson’s Detroit grit collides with Flyy’s organic opulence. It’s a clash of two worlds: blood on the floor on one side, cashmere and precise tailoring on the other. The presence of the late Sean Price and legends like General Steele lends the album spiritual weight. Rest in Peace, Sean Price.

Your Boy Posca & Boldy James – Hook, Line & Sinker

Your Boy Posca & Boldy James – Hook, Line & Sinker cover

Hook, Line & Sinker by Your Boy Posca and Boldy James is a raw examination of life on the margins, where loyalty matters more than money. The track Taken to the Grave defines the entire album, with Boldy James rapping with ice-cold calm. His bars are facts delivered with the blunt empathy of a man who has seen too many endings before reaching adulthood. It’s hard-hitting and unvarnished. Posca’s production perfectly complements this tension. No unnecessary ballast, just a minimalist backdrop that lets every word stand out. The album is the sound of survival in Detroit, one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. It’s straightforward and eerily authentic. Boldy James continues at an unstoppable pace.

Hus Kingpin – Wavo Forever

Hus Kingpin – Wavo Forever cover

Wavo Forever by Hus Kingpin is concentrated, unfiltered noir rap. It’s a dirty velvet that envelops you from the very first beat by RZA and doesn’t let go until the final notes by Bronze Nazareth. The centerpiece of this street art exhibition is the track THE PLEASURES. Here, Hus, Rozewood, and Smoovth don’t just showcase raw rap technique. The track exudes authentic nostalgia as well as the coldness of a mirror in which he asks who he has actually become. The album’s strength lies in its uncompromising nature. Features from Ghostface Killah or Raekwon aren’t just marketing gimmicks but an organic part of Hus’s world. The entire tracklist feels like a carefully curated menu for connoisseurs who want to hear the crackle of vinyl and feel the weight of every word.

Jeremy Ryan – What’s Bracken

Jeremy Ryan is a rapper from Jacksonville, Florida, whom we discovered just last week. Together with producer Bluff Gawd, they released the conceptual album What’s Bracken, on which Ryan’s energetic flow behind the mic really stands out. As the album’s intro suggests, the record oscillates between serious and lighter tones. Are the tracks based on real events, the rapper’s experiences and emotions, or do they venture into the realm of fiction? Throughout the album, the listener remains on the edge of their seat, completely mesmerized by the cadence with which Jeremy Ryan raps. Thanks to his determination, the album never gets boring and maintains its momentum throughout its entire runtime.
