NEWS OF THE WEEK

Domo Genesis and Graymatter get what you don’t get

Domo Genesis, a member of the famous Odd Future group, has been one of the most prominent rappers for several years. His distinctive voice and laid-back yet sophisticated flow are instantly recognizable. Domo has never completely disappeared from the scene; he just doesn’t release like on a treadmill, yet we dare say that last year’s Intros, Outros & Interludes (w/ Evidence) was a sort of imaginary comeback. This year, Domo has continued his beauty ride, unleashing his cult mixtapes, 2012’s No Idols (w/ The Alchemist) and 2017’s Red Corolla, on streaming services. This gives all rap fans two essential pieces of our beloved culture to fill up on. We’re extremely grateful for these two gifts, yet we were hoping the rapper would gift us with a new record as well. Luckily, our wishes were granted.

Domo Genesis and producer Graymatter have released a first-class album, What You Dont Get!?. Graymatter is no newcomer, but a seasoned producer who we praise whenever he produces something. It’s not even been a month since he dazzled us with Sounds That Never Left My Soul (w/ Ty Farris) and once again, his magical beats are playing in our ears. Domo Genesis is an unbridled force behind the mic with so much charisma that you just can’t help but be drawn to his biting voice. Rap is a sacred thing to him, and there are plenty of life truths to be found on his latest record. The title “What You Dont Get!?” is indeed fitting; like Evidence, Domo wastes no time with the superfluous and gets to the heart of the matter. The album also features guest appearances from 3wayslim, Remy Banks, Nicole Bus, and Fly Anakin, giving you no reason not to listen to the record immediately.

NEWS

A feature-length documentary takes you behind the curtain of one of this year’s best albums

Were you also absorbed by the album Leather Blvd. by duo B. Cool-Aid? Ahead of their European tour, which kicks off on November 3 in Paris, the duo has put together a documentary about the record, capturing the recording, mixing, and mastering process. The atmosphere of the documentary is absolutely magical; thanks to the great authentic footage, you feel like you were there during the creation of this work. Much respect is undoubtedly due to Dynamite Hill and all the close friends of the artists who helped in the making of this gem. B. Cool-Aid is unique in today’s music scene, and any music lover will love their work.

The Alchemist celebrated his birthday behind the mic

We already know not to call The Alchemist a legend. After all, no word can capture his influence on rap culture or his life’s work. On Oct. 25, the artist celebrated his forty-sixth birthday, and it’s no surprise that Al wasn’t just thinking of himself but also his fans. That’s why he released the bone-chilling Nothing Is Freestyle video, in which we can hear him behind the mic once again doing something unprecedented. In addition, we have the Flying High 2 EP coming on Friday, which we are incredibly excited about. No need for words; The Alchemist is a rap chapter in his own right, and we hereby wish him all the best.

Sure, you know who JPEGMAFIA is, but do you know who Devon Hendyrx is?

Devon Hendryx, or the alter ego of today’s JPEGMAFIA, has released a remaster of his album THE GHOST~POP TAPE after ten years, which you can listen to today on streaming services with the remastered or the original sound. After listening to the album, one thing is clear: JPEG has always been true to his alternative sound and has always liked to break away from musical standards. Even after ten years since its release, the album has not aged at all; on the contrary, we dare say it has matured. JPEG is certainly one of the greatest talents of our time, and there is no doubt about his timelessness. Listen to THE GHOST and let yourself be carried away by the atmospheric music.

BEST RELEASES

Bloo Azul & Sherman – Bloojería

Bloo Azul & Sherman - Bloojería cover
Bloo Azul & Sherman – Bloojería cover

Bloo Azul has already released two great projects this year: 83 (w/ Passport Rav) and Bloo Moon 2 (w/ Spanish Ran). The Bronx-based talent has been releasing like crazy, so he teamed up with producer Sherman, and they opened a portal into Bloojería, a world full of rap magic. They’ve spilled vats full of rap alchemy on their latest release, and you can look forward to an incredibly laid-back project that will keep you unbelievably entertained from start to finish. Bloo Azul is less serious here than on the previous albums mentioned, and without question, I enjoyed every minute of making the album. Guests AJ Suede and Brainorchestra have infused gallons of their unique personalities into the final product, and the resulting blend is a highly addictive rap drink that you’ll drink by the mouthful.

Elcamino & 38 Spesh – Martyrs Prayer II

Elcamino & 38 Spesh – Martyrs Prayer II cover

Elcamino and 38 Spesh return after three years to release the follow-up to Martys Prayer. It may be a short EP, but thanks to their chemistry with each other, which we’ve had a chance to taste several times already, the project will get under your skin. Spesh has cooked up dusty productions that are simultaneously very punchy and lilting. These are exactly the kinds of beats that suit Elcamin the best. The rapper is very talented; he knows how to work with melodies, and in addition to that, he delivers real and bone-chilling lyrics. As the title of the project suggests, the album captures melancholy and a life saturated with struggle and crime. This is exactly the theme that both artists reflect in their work, whether Spesh in his beats or Elcamino in his lyrics. Martys Prayer II is a very good sequel in which you will find out what has or has not changed since the first volume. No music video was released for the EP, so we’re attaching the video for the track Legal Money from the first part.

Rahiem Supreme x Noface – Outer Limits

Godzilla Supreme and Dough Face. As soon as we saw the combination of these names, it was immediately clear to us that the resulting project would be absolutely special. Expectations were fulfilled. Noface doesn’t know how to step wrong, and whichever production he takes on, he always makes sure to release a masterpiece. The beats on Outer Limits are no exception. Rahiem Supreme brought his Betty on the record so he could drift through the beats the best he could. Rahiem has a sixth sense for rap and never ceases to amaze us with how relaxed he sounds in any chaotic production, never losing his sense of humor and always delivering a lyrical treat. That’s not all; on the record, you’ll hear artists like Koncept Jack$on, Fatboi Sharif, and al.divino. All the mythical figures of contemporary rap in one place. This is a must-hear.

Mary Sue & psychedelic ensemble. – CACOPHONOUS DIGRESSIONS A RECORD OF A MOMENT IN TIME cover

Mary Sue is a rapper we fell in love with this year. The talent from Singapore is the voice of the younger generation, who can perfectly capture the emotions and life events that many of us go through. His album For Sure this year is a shining example of this. What we feel is often not tangible; we can’t find the cause, but rather we get lost in the chaos, in which we want to find our way at any cost. And even that is often impossible. This is exactly what CACOPHONOUS DIGRESSIONS A RECORD OF A MOMENT IN TIME sounds like, produced by a psychedelic ensemble. The monumental work is a mixture of all kinds of sounds, noisy beats, guitar passages, and chaotic lyrics by rapper Mary Sue. The tracks are hard to grasp and decipher, but easy to relate to and find shelter from the world for a while. The album is available on Bandcampu and Soundcloudu for now, and you can find it on streaming services on Friday.

BoriRock & DVNTBEATS – IT AIN’T ABOUT ME

BoriRock has appropriated this year for sure and is releasing his fifth project, IT AIN’T ABOUT ME, on which he pays tribute and humbles all the artists who inspire him, who have shaped him into his current image, and thanks those who support him. DVNTBEATS took care of all production on the record and once again did an excellent job. He cooked up minimalistic productions with an incredible vibe; the beats have a slower tempo, and Bori handles all the space absolutely flawlessly. IT AIN’T ABOUT ME allows you to see Bori in a new light as he raps to beats that are slightly out of the ordinary for him, building a unique position in the scene. No sound takes him by surprise, and he sounds confident on every beat.
