NEWS OF THE WEEK
It is not a rapper from the United States, Canada or Central America who has earned a place on the cover of today’s article, but mary sue, a rising star from Singapore. We only discovered his album KISSES OF LIFE earlier this year, if it had been last year, it would have definitely shaken up our Top 100 Best Rap Albums of 2022 list. mary sue immediately dazzled us with his hypnotic rap in which he deals with feelings and themes that every listener can relate to in a completely open and sensitive way.
Unlike his Singaporean peers, mary sue raps to minimalistic and spacious lo-fi beats. His heroes are MF DOOM and Earl Sweatshirt, and artists like MIKE, Navy Blue, and Jadasea come to mind when listening to the rapper’s music. Still, mary sue has its own unique charm. We immediately connected with his music, and it evoked feelings we knew well. Yet we are as far apart as the Czech Republic is from Singapore.
mary sue is the rising voice of a young generation with huge things ahead. Why are we writing about him today? His new album, For Sure, will be released on July 28, and you can pre-order it on Bandcamp. Both digital and vinyl versions are available. Look forward to fourteen tracks, a plethora of talented producers, and guests or backing instruments. You can already listen to the pilot track For/Sure (Prelude), accompanied by a great video. Expectations are astronomical.
NEWS
Trust your chef, Mello Music Group will cook you an Omakase album
The renowned Mello Music Group label has a habit of releasing great compilations on which their artists shine. This year will be no different. You can look forward to Omakase on August 25. What does the label itself reveal about it? Omakase is a musical journey inspired by the essence of the Japanese phrase often used in fine sushi restaurants, meaning to trust the chef’s hand. In this context, it signifies entrusting someone dedicated to their passion to guide you through a captivating experience. You can listen to four tracks from the album today. Among them are YUNGMORPHEUS – The Price, and Denmark Vessey – Marionette Flex (feat. Nolan & Fly Anakin). You can find the tracklist and cover over here.
Legendary The Streets have announced a new album, we know the details
In the second half of our article, we will let loose a little bit and go on an adventure on the borders of alternative hip-hop, garage, grime, and electronic music. Legendary musical project The Streets led by Mike Skinner, announced its sixth studio album. A long hiatus followed 2011’s Computers and Blues, but on October 20, 2023, The Streets will return with their new album, The Darker The Shadow The Brighter The Light. You can already pre-order the CD, cassette, or vinyl. You can expect 15 songs with pilot singer Troubled Water, for which a great music video has been released. Waiting will still be long, but let’s hope that it will be worth it.
Spanish Ran, 2023 MVP, is about to release three more albums this year
Painting Houses (UFO Fev), A.NY Ghetto U.S.A (Tree Mason), Holy City Zoo (Al-Doe), and The Policy Kings (Waterr) belong among the best albums of this year. All of them have one thing in common, and that is the name Spanish Ran. The talent from the Bronx produced all of these standout projects in six months, peppering them with details and tailoring them to each rapper. Four amazing projects within the span of one year is an inhumane achievement on its own, but even that is not enough for Ran. The producer announced on Twitter that we can expect three more records this year. No, you are not the only ones who cannot understand how this is even possible, but still, we are not expecting anything less than candidates for the best album of the year.

JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown – SCARING THE HOES: DLC PACK
Rarely will you get a mainstream album that confronts you, brings you into the unknown, takes you into the unknown, and forces you out of your comfort zone. JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown delivered their album exactly like that. Their album SCARING THE HOES is a piece of music that has resonated with listeners to this day. As the artists begin a month-long tour of the United States on July 25, they have prepared a surprise DLC PACK for their fans. You can listen to the four new tracks that did not make it to the original project. They are not just half-cooked tracks; all of them are unreasonably dope. We were mainly surprised by the tracks HERMANOS and Tell Me Where To Go; these songs have much calmer beats than tracks on the original album and may appeal to listeners who didn’t like the loud and chaotic beats. DLC PACK is a great EP that highlights the fact that the artists get along great.
xhef & Filip Neuf – TERMINAL: TERMINAL
Talented Swedish producer Filip Neuf dazzled us two weeks ago with his great solo album, Red Car. On his latest project, TERMINAL: TERMINAL, he teams up with rapper xhef, a member of FEEL-LO, to take you on an atmospheric journey across New Jersey and Stockholm. We don’t know how to explain it, but you can just tell from Filip’s beats that he’s from Europe. His lilting and atmospheric productions breathe the cool, crystal-clear Nordic air while warming up like the Italian Riviera in summer. He always gives the rappers plenty of room to do their best. xhef has done his job to perfection. His sensitive and honest lyrics, full of regret, paranoia, and fear, will bring you to your knees. TERMINAL: TERMINAL takes you to the brink of death, to the door to the afterlife. Yet this is not an apocalyptic or merely melancholic record; Filip’s productions add the necessary ambiguity and depth to the subject matter. Such as life itself has. There is no music video for the album, so we attached the whole album.
Def Soulja & Sebb Bash – Moonlight Marauder
Are you ready to sink into the atmospheric vortex of American thrillers from the seventies, where even the main hero is no saint and adrenalin comes through to the nights of the dark city like the non-light of the metropoles? Then Moonlight Marauder is just for you. Rapper Def Soulja joined forces with producer Sebb Bash, and together they delivered a great project. Sebb Bash worked with Ty Farris last year on the album Fluorescent Mud, so the movie productions sounding like they are telling their own story are not something new to him. Def Soulja follows up last year’s projects, 42 Square Miles and Militant Minded, and takes his skill to the next level. His lyrics will suck you in, and you will not blink until the last note of the last song. No music video was released for the album, so we’re attaching the track Figure It Out.
Immi Larusso & Nil Wan – More Than That
More Than That was released on Bandcamp at the beginning of June, but since we missed it, we recommend it now, when you can listen to it on all streaming services. Immi Larusso & Nil Wan deliver exactly the kind of British sound we love. Atmospheric, minimalist UK boom-bap that we’ve dissected alongside Trellion’s Lighthouse Tape. It is then not surprising how amazed we have been by Immi Larusso, an artist who has collaborated with Trellion himself in the past. Plus, he’s got a guest appearance on More Than That from Sniff, another one of our favorite British rappers. Their joint track Corner is one of the highlights of the record. You can feel the pain in every word; the beautiful beat wraps you up and doesn’t let go. In addition, Immi Larusso and Sniff bring images to life that you just won’t see anywhere else. And the rest of the album is just as good.
SadhuGold – Golden Joe Season Three
Sit down and relax; the third and final season of everyone’s favorite animated hip-hop acid trip is here. SadhuGold, one of today’s top producers, released the project back in 2018 on cassette. Last week, however, it was released on all streaming services, and you can now enjoy the final chapter of the Golden Joe story. Nobody does beats like SadhuGold, and this project is another shining example of it. Listen to the Golden Joe preview.
