NEWS OF THE WEEK

Last year, DJ Premier released the great EP Hip Hop 50: Vol. 1, the first project of the celebratory line #HipHop50 by label Mass Appeal, which celebrates the 50th birthday of the genre. This project will be comprised of 10 different parts; each EP will be comprised of 5 tracks and will be produced by one beatmaker, taking upon themselves a certain region or style of the genre. We already have a second part of the project concentrating on the East Coast taken care of by Swizz Beatz. On the newest EP, we will hear names like Nas, Lil Wayne, Jadakiss, Benny The Butcher, Jay Electronica, and many others.

Another producer will be DJ Mustard for the West Coast, The-Dream concentrating on R&B, Mike WiLL Made-It for the South, No I.D. for the Mid-West, Hit Boy celebrating lyrics, Take a Daytrip for the alternative sound of hip-hop, and Tainy for the global reach of the genre. Fans can vote for the producer who will take care of the last project and its genre. We take this as a very interesting idea, and we cannot wait to see what we will get from other producers.

NEWS

The Alchemist and Domo Genesis gem returns to streaming services

The Alchemist just likes to spoil his fans. Not only does he release one great album after another (The Great Escape w/ Larry June from late March being a case in point), but he gives each album first-class care, and the release on streaming services is always accompanied by vinyl, CDs, and merchandise. Now he’s given us another surprise. The No Idols mixtape by rapper Domo Genesis, which was completely produced by the legendary Al, has returned to streaming services. The mixtape was released in 2012 under the Odd Future label and features guest appearances from Earl Sweatshirt, Vince Staples, Action Bronson, Smoke DZA, Freddie Gibbs, Prodigy, SpaceGhostPurrp, and Tyler, The Creator. Unsurprisingly, the artists have come up with brand new vinyl and merch, which you can purchase here.

Jay Worthy and Roc Marciano. This is the duo you want to hear

Jay Worthy gave us three projects last year. This year, he was already a guest on a few tracks and released a bunch of singles by himself, but he was waiting for his moment with the release of the album. That will all change on May 26th, when the rapper from Vancouver delivers his album Nothing Bigger Than The Program, completely produced by Roc Marciano. Alongside the name announcement, we also got the first single with Bun B as a guest. With this single, the duo assured us that there is nothing we should be afraid of and that the album will surely be amazing.

DJ Muggs announces a new album and brings lo-fi punk

Legendary producer DJ Muggs belongs among our favorite artists. He releases one great project after the other while collaborating with famous artists and lesser-known talents. A few weeks ago, Muggs produced (together with Madlib) an album called Champagne For Breakfast for Meyhem Lauren, but he had already announced another project. The artist works with rapper T.F., and their album should be out of the gate before the end of the year. Alongside DJ Muggs and T.F. in the studio, Roc Marciano and Meyhem Lauren were also seen. If that would not be enough, DJ Muggs released a single, Neon Sunburn, with virtual recording artist 8tari. In the upcoming months, label Soul Assassins will help artist 8tari release her debut album.

Zombie Juice – Love Without Conditions

Zombie Juice, a member of the Flatbush Zombies, released his first solo album, Love Without Conditions. The trio released a couple of successful projects in the last few years, and now each of the members is trying to go their own way and differentiate their solo careers from the music they produce as a group. Last year, Meechy Darko did it with his album Gothic Luxury, and this time around, Zombie Juice has done a great job as well. His solo project describes experiences with loss and violence. The rapper also talks about the times when he was homeless. The project contains a wide variety of different productions, from drill, trap, or boom bap with the elements of jazz. In between the guests are already mentioned Meechy Darko, Curren$y, The Underachievers, and many others. Now the only one left is Erick the Architect, and we cannot wait for his solo project.

Stack Skrilla & Yuno – Bless

Rapper Stack Skrilla and producer Yuno released a really good album, Bless. These two confirm that numbers do not mean quality. Both underground artists delivered more than a 45-minute letter to the genre and confessed their love for it. Yuno prepared great productions enriched by jazz and vocal samples. There are no guests on the album, which makes it even more worthy because the artists will not let you breathe for a second.

OBIJUAN & HOOKSARTHUR – WAVONOMIXX

OBIJUAN, or if you want one of the most productive rappers on the current underground scene, sends out another project, WAVONOMIXX (exclusively on Bandcamp). The album was completely produced by HOOKSARTHUR, which can be heard on one of the tracks. In addition to him, E L U C I D and Lord Apex make guest appearances on record. OBIJUAN goes about it smartly again, luring you in with the tracks ODIN and STRAW MARKET, which you can listen to for free, and after listening to them, it’s almost a given that you’ll need to hear the rest of the project as well.

Lloyd Banks backed off from the spotlight of the scene after the G-Unit fell apart, but he returned and, during the last few years, was quite active. His big return was the album The Course of the Inevitable, and now he closes the trilogy with the final part. It is rapper’s sixth album. Lloyd proves his relevance to the scene, shows he still has a lot to offer, and delivers very personal lyrics in the last bit of the trilogy. Except for him, you will also hear his ex-colleague Tony Yayo or names like Method Man, Vado, 38 Spesh, Dave East, and Cormega. Definitely do not let this one pass you by.

This gem, or if you want, the newest project by rapper III Conscious and Japanese producer BudaMunk, will get stuck in your mind. BudaMunk combines boom bap and traditional Japanese instruments, creating an absolutely iconic, unique sound. The EP contains only 7 tracks, but the feelings left behind are permanent. III Conscious testifies to his exceptional skills, which have to be mentioned. We hope for more projects by these two.
