News of the week
Rome Streetz was MVP of the last year, we placed all of his four projects somewhere on our TOP 50 best rap albums of 2021. But 2021 wasn’t Rome’s first year in a rap game, rapper is making it to the top from 2016. Rome pays attention to every project he releases, every song, every word of each song. Not many rappers on a current scene are this uncompromising, in their sound with kadence and hunger as Rome Streetz. Rapper signed deal with Griselda Records last year and ever since that everybody was super hyped for his first release under this label, and it is finally here.
Album Kiss The Ring was curated by Westside Gunn and he made sure that it is one of the most anticipated albums of the year. As Streetz said himself, Kiss The Ring is his next phase. Album has all of the amazing ingrediences of why we love rapper so much but this time around, they are all turned to eleven. Production has been taken care of by many talented producers, for example Camouflage Monk, Conductor Williams, Daringer, The Alchemist, Denny Laflare, DJ Green Lanter and Sadhugod & Sovren. Between the guests are Westside Gunn, Benny The Butcher, Conway, Boldy James, Armani Caesar and Stove God Cook$. Kiss The Ring is a brilliant example of how hardcore atmospheric rap from New York should look like in 2022 and without any hiccups, album position itself in between the best albums ever released by Griselda.
Earlier this year rapper came to Europe with his music for the first time. Tour was named Streetz Of Rage. Alongside the tour was made a documentary directed by ProlificKid® Films. In the document you can see rappers’ visits in Germany, Italy, Switzerland and England in which Rome meets some of his family members for the first time ever since he was young. Absolute neccecity for all of the fans.
News
Rest in peace Coolio
Last week unfortunately died rapper Coolio. He was 59 years old, and the cause of his death was most likely the heart attack. Rapper was able to create nine studio albums, one of them being Gangsta’s Paradise which tittle song knows absolutely everybody. Rapper’s death affected whole scene and a lot of rappers paid tribute to him. We are sending our condolences to rapper’s loved ones. RIP Coolio.
Roc Marciano & Alchemist in a great interview
We will bet that you are still listening to The Elephant Man’s Bones. Roc Marciano & Alchemist were invited to the RapRadar podcast where they shared a lot of interesting information. During the interview they discussed what is the meaning behind the name of the album, how Alchemist does his beats, Kendrick Lamar, and Marciano’s R’n’B project he was dreaming about for a while.
Best releases
Freddie Gibbs – $oul $old $eparately
We finally got highly anticipated album from Freddie Gibbs. After the projects with only one producer (Madlib and Alchemist), this time around rapper made his list of guests and producers really broad and on the album, you can find many well knows rappers and producers and wide range does not stop there, rapper also offers huge selection of different melodies, flows and themes to which he raps about. Whole album is framed in the concept of rapper’s stay in fictional $$$ Resort and Casino, so you can expect colourful skits. $oul $old $eperately is rapper’s biggest album to date without any doubt and aims on much wider audience than ever before. Freddie keeps his high standard and with the exception of few less interesting songs and weaker guests Freddie delivers absolutely amazing album. Major surprise for us was that Freddie is quite vulnerable very often on the album.
billy woods & Messiah Musik – Church
We didn’t expect this. billy woods gave us Aethiopes earlier this year, album which was completely produced by DJ Preservation and will definitely take the top spots of this year’s best. billy probably thought that one perfect album per year is not enough and so he released album Church produced by Messiah Musik. Very immersive, creative loops, billy’s distinctive rap and abstract lyrics that will make you think. billy woods is one of the best rappers ever and it seems that he is just not able make a misstep. Album guests are ELUCID, Akai Solo, Fielded and Fat Ray.
Nicholas Craven & Boldy James – Fair Exchange No Robbery
Boldy James is unstoppable. Fair Exchange No Robbery produced by Nicholas Craven is his second project of the year and we already know that another album MR. TEN08 (produced by Futurewave) is in works. We do not even have to debate that Fair Exchange No Robbery is an absolute gem. Nicholas Craven belongs in between the best producers of current scene, and we love his sampled loops and Boldy James does not seem to be able to release a bad project. Artists putted together whole album in about 24 hours, Nicholas Craven and Mike Shabb came over to Detroit where rapper picked all the beats, wrote down the lyrics and together with talents from Canada created this project. Unfortunately, artists did not release any accompanying clip for the album so enjoy video for the track Anchor where Nicholas Craven joints his forces with Navy Blue.
Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire – I Love Y.O.U Cuz Y.O.U Ugly Vol.1
Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire rapper from Brooklyn is one of the most unique names in current rap game. Combination of original beats, distinctive humor and unique lyrics always brings interesting project. Rapper has already long line of mixtapes and debut album from 2019 which is followed by I Love Y.O.U Cuz Y.O.U Ugly Vol.1. eXquire is really hungry on this project, every track is remarkable and if you feel like listing to something really creative, this is the right spot.
Sol Messiah – GOD CMPLX
Sol Messiah is producer from Atlanta and member of Rhymesayers label. He is real veteran who in the 1990s joint his forces with producer Dallas Austin and together took care of some songs for TLC, Madonna, Monica or Boyz II Men. On GOD CMPLX worked with one of the most talented rappers of current scene and gave them his well worked through boom bap beats that brings together the best from old school while still being innovative. In between the rappers you find KXNG Crooked, Sa-Roc, Evidence, Che Noir, Cambatta, Planet Asia, Aesop Rock or Baba Zumbi from Zion I.
